Commercial whale watching

New changes to whale watching operators in Great Sandy and Moreton Bay marine parks will streamline administration of commercial whale watching operations.

Operators will now:

  • have a single, annual fixed-base payment of $5000 (from 1 July 2013)
  • be required to be eco-certified
  • have access to more areas within the marine parks.

Changes to open up more whale watching areas throughout the Great Sandy and Moreton Bay Marine Parks may require legislative amendments that will happen as a priority, with appropriate consultations. Beach landings will now be allowed under environmental, safety and management conditions. Whale watching guidelines and distances remain unchanged. These new arrangements will require changes to existing permits and agreements. Officers from NPSR will contact all operators to provide more information and explain what these changes mean.
