Location

National parks, conservation parks and resources reserves are clustered around Cooktown, north of Cairns. The fully sealed inland route from Cairns is via the Kennedy Highway, Peninsula Development Road and Mulligan Highway (330km). The coastal route, suitable only for four-wheel-drive vehicles, is via the Captain Cook Highway to the Daintree River ferry, Cape Tribulation and the unsealed Bloomfield Track (234km).

What's special

The parks around Cooktown protect a variety of landscapes, from sandy beaches, dunes and tidal estuaries to freshwater wetlands and forested and boulder-strewn mountains. The area is rich with Aboriginal associations and European history and is home to some endemic animals with highly restricted ranges. See links to each park for more detailed information.
