Prescribed burn Woody Island (Tooliewah)

This alert applies to the following parks:

The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) will conduct a prescribed burn on the Woody Island (Tooliewah) section of the Great Sandy National Park between Hervey Bay and K'Gari (Fraser Island), weather permitting, between 21 May and 31 July 2018.

As a result, smoke may be seen in the Hervey Bay and K’Gari (Fraser Island) area. Smoke may decrease visibility on the water, it is important that boaties operate to the conditions.

The aim of this burn is to reduce the volume of forest fuels and the subsequent intensity of potential wildfires to protect the island’s heritage listed lighthouses and associated axillary buildings, to create a mosaic pattern of burnt and unburnt areas within the park and, to provide favourable conditions for natural forest regeneration.

Camping areas, walking tracks and day-use areas may be closed at short notice. Obey signage and directions from rangers.
