Zoning plans

The principal way of managing marine parks is to develop a zoning plan which clearly identifies the different zones within the park. The Marine Park Regulation 2017 or the relevant zoning plan usually state the objectives for each zone and list the activities that are:

  • unrestricted
  • allowed with a permit
  • prohibited.

A zoning plan may also designate specific locations where special management rules apply. Different levels of protection apply in different zones, but a wide range of uses (including fishing and boating) are allowed in most. In only a few zones, certain activities are prohibited.

Information guides use coloured areas on maps to indicate different zones, and tables to indicate what activities are/are not permitted in each zone.

As subordinate legislation, zoning plans are legally enforceable, and  penalties apply for breaches.
