The Department of National Parks, Sport and Racing is one of two Queensland Government departments responsible for the oversight of legislation which enables the operation of the racing industry in Queensland.
NPSR has administrative responsibility for the Racing Act 2002 and the Racing Regulation 2013.
Its role extends to being the administrative agency with oversight of Racing Queensland — a statutory body responsible for the commercial and operational management of the state's racing industry across the thoroughbred, harness and greyhound codes — and any future control bodies for other approved codes of racing.
The department also has responsibility over other government initiatives supporting the racing industry, including the Country Racing Support Program.
The department works in conjunction with other agencies responsible for the governance and administration of the racing industry in Queensland under the Racing Integrity Act 2016. These agencies include the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission (QRIC) and Queensland Treasury.
