Camping in Diamantina National Park

Enjoy spectacular sunsets and abundant bird life from the banks of the Diamantina River at Hunters Gorge camping area, or relax beside Whistling Duck Creek and enjoy bush camping beneath shady coolibah trees at Gum Hole camping area.

Camping permits are required and fees apply. A camping tag with your booking number must be displayed at your camp site.

Park-specific conditions

Be alert and prepared for changes in weather. Even small amounts of rain on the park or in surrounding areas can cause floods at any time of year. If heavy rain or minor flooding occurs, move to higher ground.

Ensure you have read things to know before you go and staying safe.

Hunters Gorge camping area

Camping area features: open bush camping sites by Mundawerra Waterhole on the Diamantina River. This area is well suited to camper trailers but has few shade trees and is exposed to frequent high winds.

Location: 4km from the turn-off to Hunters Gorge signed on Springvale Road.

Access: the camping area can only be reached by 4WD and camper trailers and caravans with high clearance.

Number of sites: open area without defined sites.

Camp sites are suitable for: tent camping beside your vehicle; camper trailers. Not suitable for large caravans.

Camp site surface: dirt.

Facilities: pit toilet.

Open fires: permitted, except when fire prohibitions or fire bans are in place. Fuel stoves are recommended.

Generators: not allowed, except for medical reasons (with NPSR permission).

Essentials to bring: all food and drinking water, sturdy rubbish bags, insect repellent, sun protection, first aid kit, reliable torch, vehicle spares and sufficient fuel. Read more about things to know before you go.

Mobile phone coverage: unavailable; satellite phones and UHF radios recommended.

Gum Hole camping area

Camping area features: private sites shaded by coolibah and bauhinia trees along Whistling Duck Creek.

Location: approximately 500 m from the turn-off to Gum Hole signed on Springvale Road.

Access: the camping area can be reached by 4WD only. Camper trailers are not recommended.

Number of sites: 5 separate but unnumbered sites.

Camp sites are suitable for: tent camping beside your vehicle.

Camp site surface: sand.

Facilities: pit toilet.

Open fires: permitted, except when fire prohibitions or fire bans are in place. Fuel stoves are recommended.
