Clyde Creek is part of the proposed Calliope River declared Fish Habitat Area

The second round of consultation on the proposed declaration of two new Fish Habitat Areas (FHAs) at Calliope River (Gladstone) and Leekes Creek (Great Keppel Island), and extension of the existing Fitzroy River declared FHA (Rockhampton) to include Balaclava Island and surrounding wetlands has now closed and responses are being considered.

The Central Queensland proposed new and extended FHA map (PDF, 2.8M) shows the location of the areas under consideration. Proposal Plans (based upon the revised Area of Interest plans following submissions made during the first round of consultation) are provided below.

Investigation of the fish habitat value of these areas is part of the declared FHA Investigations Program, Central Queensland).

Calliope River, Gladstone

The Calliope River is proposed to be declared a management B area. Within a management B FHA, public and private structures may be authorised, subject to assessment.

Leekes Creek, Great Keppel Island

The Leekes Creek area is proposed to be declared a management A FHA. Within a management A FHA, small scale public boating access structures may be authorised, subject to assessment.

Fitzroy River declared FHA, Rockhampton

Expansion of the Fitzroy River declared FHA also forms part of a key Queensland Government commitment to protect the Fitzroy delta in the Reef 2050 Long-Term Sustainability Plan. It is proposed that the extension to the declared FHA will be a management A area. Within a management A FHA, small scale public boating access structures may be authorised, subject to assessment.

Consultation and declaration process

Two rounds of consultation have been conducted for the declared FHA proposals and the responses to the second round are currently being considered.

Should the submissions show stakeholder support, NPSR will seek endorsement from the Minister for National Parks, Sport and Racing to progress amendment of the Fisheries Regulation 2008 for FHA declaration to be in effect by late 2016.
